Theme of Human Rights Day 2010:
This year’s theme was to about defenders standing against Human discrimination. On this day these defenders spoke on the oppression, discrimination and violence faced by many nations. They also emphasized on the need of making the government accountable and transparent about the actions and policies. These selfless defenders work either alone or in groups, risking their lives in the process and passion of bringing equality in rights to the oppressed people. These defenders come from a cross section of the society’ some of them are professionals like doctors, professors, lawyers while others have little or no educational background. But what binds them is their will and fight for the oppressed in the society and their rights.
This year the defenders against Human discrimination discussed on the following important subjects amongst others.
- Combating discrimination against Homosexuals.
- Combating racial and other discrimination.
- Discussing measures to end discrimination against Roma communities.
- HIV positive patients.
- Speaking on rights of women and children.
This day reminds us of the oppression still prevailing in the 21st century. Many countries despite all the efforts of various interested parties for prevention of Human Rights. About 159 countries have violated Human Rights in the year 2010 according to the Amnesty’s International reports. This report throws light on the how politician in various countries exercise Human rights only when it’s politically convenient for them. Whether it’s Israel with its ruthless behavior against Palestinians or the International Criminal Courts (ICC) preferring to be a mere spectator and indifferent towards the war crimes committed by the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Chechnya .Wiki leaks took the initiative of exposing all the wrong-doings of the Government against the people who boast of their democracy. It’s quite clear that the political parties are going to continue doing things as long as it suits their requirements and interests. It easier for them to pay lip service to their respective contributions to the Human Rights Day than to actually make it work keeping in minds the interests and betterment of the larger section of the society.
